In the age of West Nile virus, protection against biting insects is a must. Here are some tips to consider for your family next canoe trip or an outing to the local park.
Insects are attracted by bright colors, fragrances and stagnant water. Therefore, avoid wear pink and red tones, as well as perfumes and scented lotions when venturing outside. Otherwise, the insects could mistake you for an exquisite flower and get bitten many times!
Wear insect repellent on parts of the body uncovered, but avoid the face and hands, especially on children.
Insect repellents with 10% DEET protects for up to 3 hours (examples: OFF, Cutter, Avon Skin So Soft) and may be re-applied up to 3 times per day. Of course, wash your skin after you or your child comes indoors.
DEET is the only recommended insect repellent to avoid the "West Nile virus."
Do not use repellents on infants under 2 months of age, and use with extreme caution in older infants.
By the bite of an insects, apply a cold compress to the bite area immediately. Benadryl can be administered and itching. If swelling, redness and tenderness persist or worsen, contact your health care immediately. Insect bites become infected in May and cause cellulitis, soft tissue infection around the bite. When this occurs, the skin is red, is soft and warm to the touch. It could be seen drainage. Infection needs to be evaluated and treated by your child care provider health.
