One Year

We all know that New Year is a time of celebration, a time to join family and friends to say goodbye to the past problems and we welcome the fortunes of the future. But you – you ever wondered why January 1st marks the beginning of the year? Have you ever thought about why we celebrate in the way we do?

New Years traditions and superstitions

Over there are a number of traditions superstitious that began several years ago who lost their meaning in our days. Generally, these traditions have been adopted to influence one would have a chance in the coming year. For example, New Years Eve parties that we know and love all began because of the belief that what was the first day of the year could affect their chances. Therefore the parties will midnight and in the new year and this also explains why they concern of many relatives and friends.

When the clock strikes midnight, it is common for us to embrace our loved ones and make a lot of noise to celebrate the beginning of a new year. While most of us accomplish this goal without really thinking about it, there's a reason behind this superstition. Traditionally, people embraced to ensure that the relationship lasted until the end of the year and they have a lot of noise because they believed that this would frighten evil spirits.

History of New Years Day

The origins of New Year celebrations dating back thousands of years. In about 2000BC the Babylonians celebrated the new year over a period of 11 days. This period did not begin on January 1 as would be wait, it actually started with the first new moon after the first day of spring (also known as the vernal equinox).

It was not until 153BC that January was declared as the beginning of the year by the Romans. The month was named after Janus, the mythical god of beginnings. The calendar year has become much more similar to that used in our days in 46BC when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar. After consultation with an astronomer He reiterated the calendar year with the movement of the sun and marked January 1 as the beginning of the new year.

New Years Resolutions

The folk tradition of making New Year resolutions has its origins in ancient Babylon and Rome. The Babylonians would typically return the farm equipment they had borrowed during the year, while the time of Caesar Janus became the symbol resolution because it had two faces that could turn to the past and the future.

Today we make New Years resolutions to try to improve certain aspects of ourselves in the coming year. Popular resolutions include quitting smoking, lose weight and get out debt. That sounds good, but the sad truth is that most of us break them before the year is out. In fact, a recent study revealed that 22% of people abandon their resolution in the first week and the end of March more than half of New Years resolvers have declined to follow suit.

So what can we do to ensure we achieve our New Year's resolutions? To be honest, I do not know not really, but I can give you a big head start.
